Launch of a new, world-first grape variety – Pink-Diamond seedless

grape - high resAn exciting new grape variety has been developed on the property of the Buselich family in the Swan Valley. David Buselich and his parents are launching the variety, Pink-Diamond Seedless, on Saturday 16 February at their Subiaco Farmers’ Market stall.

It was a lucky discovery that led to the development of Pink-Diamond Seedless. On a large scale vineyard, a red variant on a single vine may have escaped attention. The keen eyes of family members observed this anomaly. The mother vine was then monitored, and propagating material from this vine led to hundreds of vines, which would then become trial plots on the Buselich property.

As growers over four decades, they have seen many varieties come and go. However, Pink-Diamond seedless seem to tick all the boxes. “It’s easy to grow, crops well, and has great visual appeal and a fantastic flavour,” says David Buselich. “ It could be considered the ideal variety.”

The feedback from those fortunate to have seen and tasted this variety has been overwhelmingly positive.

Pink-Diamond seedless is a red variant of the very popular Dawn seedless variety. It has an attractive, pink berry with a distinctive, fragrant, tropical flavour and a crisp texture. As a mid season grape it fills a gap between early flame seedless and late crimson seedless.  Perth consumers will welcome the timing of this unique variety within the grape season.

Farmers’ markets are a wonderful opportunity for consumers to meet local producers and ask about the provenance and growing process of the food they buy and eat. At Subiaco Farmers’ market, people are very aware of seasonal grape varieties and interested in their different attributes.

Pink-Diamond seedless will be available in limited release, as it is registered and protected by Australian Plant Breeders Rights, and solely owned by David Buselich and family. This year provides a preview and tasting, with good supplies expected in 2014.
