Getting your kids into the kitchen has never been easier with the new “Kids Can Cook” cooking classes starting at Subi Farmers Market. Led by renowned Chef Dale Sniffen, kids aged 9-13 can take part in this series of cooking classes where they will learn how to cook from scratch, shopping for & preparing all ingredients & learning all the basic skills required for great cooking.

Chef Dale is a free lance chef with over 25 years experience in all styles of food from Italian to Japenese. With plenty of pizzazz & style, Chef Dale has his own special flavour which he will bring to the “Kids Can Cook” Programme. Presented in a simple & entertaining way, the classes will enable your child to cook breakfast, lunch & dinner. Imagine arriving home from work to a delicious & wholesome meal cooked from scratch by your kids – now it is possible! Kids really can cook real food!
We’ll take your kids on an exciting journey of discovering great fresh food, with tips on healthy eating, the world’s longest pasta project & a finals competition. Places are strictly limited – be quick to secure your booking.

Mushrooms were everywhere at the Market last Saturday – with many varieties available & our live Mushroom Mascot adding to the fun!

Chef Lee Martin from By Word of Mouth Catering cooked up 2 sensational dishes with a little help from son Ben Martin – Mushroom Pasta & Panfried Swiss mushrooms, feta cheese, rocket and balsamic on grilled olive sourdough- using 6 types of mushrooms. Lee Martin is executive chef of  By Word of Mouth Catering & creates mouth-watering, delicious food – come & have a taste. He is a local chef with children at Subi Primary School – & will bring some magic to the mushrooms!

On a perfect winter’s day Barra & Wirra came up with the goods to prove that Footy Players can actually cook! These 2 legends of the game had to cook offagainst the talents of Emmy Kubainski & Sally Bowery – Channel 7’s weekend News team – at the Market infront of record crowds! It was a battle  of the sexes as they had to run around & collect fresh ingredients from the stalls to come up with a Gourmet Burger each.

Using the delicious Meltique Beef produce, organic bread from Loafers & a wonderful array of seasonal vegies both teams scrabbled to come up with the best plate. The girls had a secret weapon with the blender – making cashew & basil pesto to add to their Steak Sandwich – while the boys opted for eggs on top & various flavours from beetroot relish (thanks to Heritage Delight) & a tomato salsa. The crowd came forward to taste & judge – with the girls narrowly inching ahead as Steve Nelkovski (our trusty MC) tried to count the votes!

A big thank you Adrian Barrich, David Wirrapunda, Sally Bowery & Emmy Kubainski for participating in the Cook-off – the 3rd in our series of Market Chef & also to Steve Nelkovski for being such a great MC as well as all the wonderful stallholders who have generously provided such wonderful fresh produce for all our Cooking here at Subi Farmers Market.

What a perfect day it was for the 2nd Market Chef Cook-off at the Market last Saturday – in stark contrast to the 1st in our series of 3 cook-offs – the day dawned clear & bright & after a cold start of jut 4 degrees it warmed up to a glorious day as the most delicious food was being cooked by Chef Dale Sniffen & Chef Don Hancey…720 ABC Perth Radio broadcast the Saturday Breakfast Show live & had all the cooking action covered – & later with Sabrina Hahn garden Guru answering the many question from the crowd – well done Sab!

Both chefs were off to a great start scouring the Market for the best ingredients – it was like being a kid in a lolly shop they said – as they collected succulent prawns, muscles & rankin cod from the Seafood Stall, organic beeef from Redtail Ridge, olive oil from Guinea Grove & the best vegies from Vergones, Heritage Delight, S &C Fiolo’s, Kym’s Mushrooms & Supa Fresh Lettuce – as well as Ellah’s Eggs to cook up a breakfast feast. James Lush was in on the preparation too – peeling fresh peas & throwing radishes around! As knives were flying the heat turned up on the barbeques to produce the tastiest breakfast of the morning.

Chef Don’s spectacular frypan from his PAN-O-RAMA Catering business was filled with 3kg of seafood & the freshest seasonal vegies around – it was gone in a flash as the hungry crowd gathered! And there was no stopping Chef Dale – after breakfast he went on to cook a beef salad dish & the smoothest potatoes I’ve ever seen – in only 8 mins! The verdict from the onlookers was a fair & even 9.5 /10 each -impossible to pick a winner with such a high standard on each side! James Lush will be capturing all the action of the next Celebrity Market Chef Cooking Challenge – with the ABC’s resident chef  Dale Sniffen cooking off against renowned WA Chef Don Hancey. Dale Sniffen has been a free lance chef for more than 25 years cooking everything from Italian to Japanese dishes.
